______ couldn't sleep. She rolled the her side, she counted sheep, she remade her bed, she listened to piano music on her iPod, she sung a lullaby to herself, she tapped on the wall in a steady rhythm and...nothing. All she could do was stare at the ceiling. She sighed and got out of the guest bed at her friend's house.
______ was currently at her friend Kiku's house since she was taking a trip to New York and that was her only friend there. She wanted to see everything there and she didn't really now the place well. So, ______ called up her friend Kiku and asked him if she could stay at his house and he agreed. Well, he didn't live in the city where she was going, but he was in a town close enough so he could guide her.
It was sweet of him to do so, _______ admitted. But, one thing she hated during her trip was some of the stares she had gotten, and they weren't discrete about it. They looked at her like she definitely shouldn't even wear a t-shirt! She didn't like many of the people there, but New York City was amazing so far for her trip.
______ got some t-shirts and got to be a tourist, but a smart one because of her friend. She's realized she had feelings for him for a while now, in fact. 'But why would he go out with someone like me?' She said to herself.
She got out of bed, having the bed creek in protest and walked on the hardwood floor. _______ walked out of her room and then went through a hall and tiptoed down the stairs. She finally got to the front door and walked onto the porch and sat down on the bench of the porch, looking at the night sky.
Since they were about fifty miles from New York, she was able to see a lot of stars in the night instead of only the North Star.
______ shared an interest of stars like her friends Ivan and Alfred, she always got out to look at them at least once a night. It was fun to see how different they were from different places like her house or her friend Michelle's, she lived right on the pacific ocean and she was lucky she could spend a night there to look at the moon meeting the water like it was always meant to be there.
“______?” She heard a familiar voice call to her, which made her jump out of her skin. She looked back at the door to find Kiku with two cups of tea.
“Oh, hi Kiku. Couldn't sleep?”
“No.” He said and sat own by her on the bench and gave her the tea cup. He looked up at the night sky as well. “I even tried your suggestion of eating turkey, but I couldn't sleep even with a plate full.”
She arched a brow. “Why do you still have turkey? Thanksgiving was seven months ago.”
“I know, I made it for when my family came over.” he replied and took a sip of his tea. “I hope you like Jasmine. If not, I can make more tea.”
“Oh I love Jasmine, thank you Kiku.” She replied to him with a smile and the two looked up at the night sky.
“Tonight reminds me of that project we had in third grade when  we put holes through a large tarp and our class was laying underneath it listening to  radio show about it.” Kiku said, randomly.
She looked at him and was surprised. That was the first day they met. He was a new student and she immediately made friends with him, with how calm they usually were. They even held hands under the tarp and she remembered how she felt when she did, she still has that feeling of butterflies in her stomach even when he's near now. “I remember that. Especially how angry I was when Alfred teased us.”
Kiku laughed a little. “I remember when you pulled his hair and stuffed wood chips in his mouth.” The both laughed at the memory and then it was silent.
For a few moments, it was like that until Kiku asked “______, have you not slept well recently other than tonight?”
“No,” She replied. “I guess tonight's different.”
He grunted. “I agree, this night is different.”  They two looked up enjoying the others company while looking at the night sky. It seemed the stars danced with how big they were. She lived in a city, so she could never see a night sky as bright as this one usually.
Kiku looked at her with only his eyes moving, she was absolutely amazed at the sky, as if she's seeing it for the first time. He looked back at the sky and smiled to himself. She was more pretty than those stars and she looks at them as if nothing could top them. 'Oh if only she could see what she truly is.' He thought to himself.
She was the first to crack a yawn and she asked “Hey Kiku, what time is,” Another yawn from her interrupted her for a second. “It?” She finished.
He looked at his watch and replied “Two thirty two.”
Her eyes widened. “Wow, it was one when I woke up!” She stood up and said “Sorry to leave you Kiku, but I'm tired actually.”
“Oh I don't mind.” He said, turning to her. “I'm glad you are finally tired enough to go to bed.”
She smiled, he was always polite, even if he was dead tired and couldn't fall asleep. “Thanks for the tea.”
“You're welcome,” He replied and gave her a small smile. She went to the door and closed it behind her, leaving him with his thoughts. He looked at the night sky, just wondering exactly what's in her mind that made her stay up, he knew the reason and it was her.
If Kiku had to be honest, hes had a crush on her ever since he first saw her. He's been a lot better with hiding the fact ever since that day. Even thought they were the same age, he skipped two grades since his grades were amazing and she was a freshman in college (living in the dorms) while he has gotten one of his family's houses and was able to move in when he was old enough.
This house was his grandfather's, he loved him very much and was his favorite out of everyone in his family. His wife died a long time ago, so he couldn't give anything to her. But, he did leave Kiku all of his money and the house. He was still trying to get over it, it was so nice of him.
He was surprised since all they really did was play Chinese checkers and talked about swords, life, their problems, basically anything that came to mind. But, he was still very close to his grandfather, even when he passed, which was about a year ago.
He would go to his grave and tell him about his day and ask him how he was in the afterlife and told him to say 'hi' to his grandmother for him. Kiku was an intern currently at an animation studio, it was amazing and great to see how animation was done. He didn't like getting coffee, but he did like the fact that he was able to work so close with someone who was huge in the animation business.
He appreciated everything he has and loves his family, but he wants someone else in his life. He fell in love with her soul and he understood every word that she said. She never needed to explain his feelings to him, if she was sad and explained, it was exactly what he would do in that situation. Except for putting wood chips in Alfred's mouth, he tried to stop her that time.
And yet, they somehow became friends. He shook of the thought, and then yawned. He felt his eyes droop a little and then he stretched out and cracked his back. He hummed in content and muttered “Well, it looks like it's time for bed.” He drank the rest of his tea and went inside to his own bed after stopping into the kitchen to put the glass in the dishwasher.
He was glad she came to his house, he didn't feel alone anymore with her. In the crowd of New York City, he always felt alone when he walked through the streets, but he didn't with her and he liked that fact.
. . .
The two woke up and Kiku made breakfast for them, he didn't have much money, so he hasn't had food from his country in a while. So, he made pancakes, or at least tried. The first ones looked like they came from a coal mine. So, _______ had to step in and make them. They turned out golden and fluffy as if they came from an IHOP commercial and he wasn't going to admit out loud, but he thought the smirk that she gave when she made the pancakes perfectly was pretty cute.
After they ate, Kiku was looking at a full map of New York City and asked “So _______, where would you like to go? The Empire State building? Central Park? Maybe Chinatown?”
“Uh, let me see what's there.” She said and stood beside him to see the huge map of New York City. “Ooh, the Flatiron Building, lets go there! And then little Italy, them Metropolitan Museum of art, next Grand Central Terminal and finally, the Rockefeller center!”
Kiku nodded. “That sounds nice. Even though I have been to New York a few times, I have never been to the Grand Central Terminal.”
“Really?” She asked and he shook his head. “Well, we're gonna change that.” She said with confidence.
. . .
Everything they saw so far was amazing and nothing really got them down. Kiku was glad to bring his camera along, he was able to take many pictures of the city and her. He loved how she looked, everything was so new to her and she looked at it more of a challenge than something scary, unlike him. He was scared at first when he came here for the first time. In fact, he got mugged twice in the same day and the next he was there, someone though he was trying to rob them and got whacked with a wooden umbrella handle.
When they were at the Rockefeller center, he sighed as he took it in, this was the first place he went to on his first trip here. Her smile was something he felt that angels painted rather than her muscles working in her cheeks. She also had a camera, but it was a Polaroid and the one she had has the pictures that come out of a small slot on the bottom, it also had three stripes on the camera.
They were align with the Prometheus statue in the lower plaza, the two were looking at it in interest and she took a picture of it. “I'm gad that I bought a few packs of the pictures or I would've been screwed.”
He smiled and nodded, then they looked back at the statue. “______?” He asked. She looked at him and hummed, telling him to continue. “Why were you awake in the middle of the night last night?”
She shrugged. “I don't know, why were you?” She asked.
“I was because of you.” He said truthfully, his face getting a little red.
“Why me? Did I wake you?” She asked.
He sighed a shaky breathe and asked “______, can I tell you something.” And the turned toward her to stare directly at her.
“S-sure Kiku.” She replied.
He took another deep and shaky breathe and said “______,” He paused, he wanted to tell her, but he didn't want to make this trip awkward. “I'm glad I could be here with you.”
She smiled. “I'm glad to be here with you too. Kiku, there's something I should get off my chest.”
“What is it?” He asked.
'I might as well, it's now or never.' “Kiku, I really really like you. And I have for a while actually and thank you so much for letting me stay at your house, that's awesome of you. And I've had this weird feeling in my stomach when I'm just around you and my throat feels a little tight. But, if I made it awkward or anything, I'll go and-” Kiku put a finger to her lips and then put his arms around her chubby form.
“The reason I couldn't fall asleep was because I was thinking of you, trying to think how to ask you and I'm glad you did. You were better thinking on your feet than I am.”
He looked at her and gave a small smile. He inched closer and closer to his lips until they were only a mere centimeter apart. “May I?” She answered by pushing her lips onto his. The kiss was soft like she expected, and sweet, also she felt relief. It was a short kiss and his face was red from showing that much affection.
She smiled and said “Aww Kiku, you're so cute when you blush like that!” That comment didn't make it go away any time soon.
